TMLA takes on Italy!

The Italian Level IV class at TMLA has been speaking regularly with a class in Italy. Under the direction of TMLA Italian teacher, Mr. Nicholas Maurantonio, the class interacts live via Skype with the students in Italy. The conversations are in both English and Italian so that both classes can practice their skills. The Italian students will be visiting TMLA in March when they tour New York City.

It is well known that TMLA Art students create beautiful work throughout the year in their classes. Recently 12 TMLA AP Art students were selected to illustrate a Christmas book written by a TMLA faculty member. Read the NY Daily News article here. All proceeds from the book go to TMLA. Annual Pax Christi Food Drive

This year's Thanksgiving Food Drive saw a huge effort on the part of the TMLA community to reach out to others. After a week of collecting food and paper products from the homerooms, cartons and cartons of donated items were put into two vans and brought to the St, Benedict the Moor Faith Mission in South Jamaica for distribution to those in need. (Please note that this organization is independent of the parish church of the same name in this area.) Thank you to all who helped out.

TMLA Seniors Select Athletic Scholarships

It's scholarship season at TMLA and three seniors have made their choice of college choice for an athletic scholarship. (Click for video) Shannon Minihane will play softball for Mercyhurst, Reanna Mohamed will play basketball for George Mason and Erika Winkler will swim for Loyola. All three girls received several scholarship offers. Shannon was offered scholarships from Nazareth, St. Thomas Aquinas College, University of Hartford, The University of the Sciences and East Stroudsburgh State. Erika received scholarships from Providence, Fairfield and St. Michael's. Reana was offered scholarships from Bucknell, Fairleigh Dickinson and Stony Brook University. Health Homeroom Prayer Service

Health Homeroom Prayer Service The seniors in the Service Homeroom for Health Issues conducted a morning prayer service whose focus was Breast Cancer. Students offered prayers for those receiving treatment for the disease, their family and supporters. Students also offered thanks to God for their good health and prayed for all those who are dealing with illness. Much thanks to Sister Patricia O'Keefe and to Mrs. Gonzales for organizing this prayer service. May God keep and protect us all in good health, so we may serve God and God's people all our days. TMLA took part in World Smile Day, held every year in October. Sponsored by the CSJ Leadership Club, students and faculty donned bright yellow t-shrts emblazoned with their own SMILE messages. The day is in honor of Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, who created the smiley face in 1963. 22 students from the CSJ schools and two parishes came together at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Brentwood for an extra special four day program of self-examination and increased awareness of God’s world and the role they can play in that world as young CSJ women. The program is called CSJ It Forward. The video is here.

Summer Art Program

Twenty-four 7th and 8th grade girls became canvas painters for a week during TMLA's Summer Fest Art Week housed in TMLA's Art studio. Students chose their own designs, then made an initial sketch which was transferred to a canvas for final painting. TMLA has a distinctive multi national award-winning Art Major program. Summer Fest French & Crochet

Students took part in a Virtual French Vacation at TMLA learning basic French and Fun French Facts. Students also viewed famous French landmarks. Later they pained Eiffel Tower replicas, then sampled crepes, cream puffs and ganache.

The Crochet 101 class learned the basics of crocheting. Each student made a scarf for herself and for her teddy bear, which arrived with a homemade sweater.

Summer Fest Healthy Body-Beautiful Body

Summer Fest Week II continues with Healthy Body-Beautiful Body. Students designed aprons and oven mitts, then learned the facts about healthy eating and body care. Students research and became familiar with portion control, ingredients, fats, calories and salt content. They employed what they learned to make healthy pizza and fruit yogurt smoothies. Students then learned how to make and apply homemade natural skin softeners and exfoliating cream. Click here for photos.

TMLA's 4th annual summer enrichment program for 7th & 8th grade girls has started. Nearly 100 young ladies from elementary schools in Queens have been taking part in a wide variety of courses including Entertainment Journalism, CSI, Healthy Body, Intro to Shakespeare, Laboratory Siences, Scrapbooking, Acrylic Painting, French and much more. Class of 2011 Graduation Mass

The Graduation Mass for the Class of 2011 was held on May 26 at Immaculate Conception Church. The entire Mass was beautiful and very moving for both the students and their families. Art Show at TMLA

The 1st Annual Art Show by TMLA students was held on May 13, 2011. Several hundred works created by current TMLA students adorned the walls and tables of the cafeteria. Guests toured the room taking in the beauty of the many wonderful works done in various mediums. Alumnae Art majors served as judges for the Art competition that was included in the event. The entire event was under the direction of TMLA Art Dept Chairperson, Mrs. Jenny Limberg-Durkin, Class of '98, who was aided by Art instructor, Ms. Olivia Infante. MTV comes to TMLA for Delete Day

TMLA Seniors conducted the first known high school Delete Day on May 6 2011. The event was organized to demonstrate to other students the power of their social media statements and to give them the opportunity to delete anything on their Facebook or other social media website that might be harmful to themselves and/or to others.

The theme of the day was based upon the Ghandi quote: "My message is my life" meaning everything I say, do and write is reflective of me.

At the 30th annual Congressional Art Competition for High School Students TMLA seniors received high accolades. Seniors Liliann Ramirez and Kristina Tricomi received honorable mention for their work and senior Amanda Ibanez-Arias was the first runner-up for Queens County. The competition took place on Sunday May 1, 2011.

St. Joseph Liturgy

This year's liturgy for St. Joseph's Day was celebrated March 21 in Immaculate Conception Church. The Feast of St. Joseph is March 19th. (In the photo at left, Ms. Angela Cacciola, long-time faculty member at TMLA, carries the statue of St. Joseph to be placed on the altar.) It is a very important and beloved day for TMLA and the Sisters of St. Joseph who sponsor TMLA and it sister CSJ schools. It is the Congregation's Patronal Feast Day. Each year the TMLA community gathers together to celebrate our patron, to thank God for his many blessings, and to ask St. Joseph for his continued care. At the liturgy the Sisters of St. Joseph renewed their vows, the lay faculty renewed their commitment to education and the students stated their commitment to excellence and service. Spirit Night 2011

The 70th Spirit Night event took place on March 18, 2011 at Queens College. The theme for this year was board games. The Queens College gymnasium was filled with students, parents, and teachers all cheering, dancing, stepping and more. The first Spirit Day/Night events began in 1940. For many years it was known as Sports Night, but the themes and activities were the same.

The Lewinger team was the Brave & Strong. At a St. Baldrick’s event, young and old, male and female, sit side by side, and face the clippers as part of the worldwide effort of Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer.

Sister Marie Mackey CSJ and her senior Religious Studies Classes have been examining, reviewing and understanding various communities of consecrated religious. Students have been experiencing the various ministries and charisms of these communities. Some of the communities they have reviewed are those that produce their own high quality food products to support their service to God and to God's people.

Sister Marie gifted her classes with sample of these delicious products including bread, jams, candy and fruit cakes from various religious communities of men and women religious. (The girls in the photo are holding jars of Trappist jelly.) During their repast, several Sisters of St. Joseph who work at TMLA offered their thoughts, memories and feelings on their life of service to God and to God's people.

Snow & Regents

Having to navigate your way through a 19 inch blanket of freshly fallen snow is not the best way to start off a Regents exam, but that's exactly what TMLA students did during the recent snowstorm. TMLA remained open so that those students who could safely make it to school would be able to take their Regents exam. Assistant Principal, Mrs. Ann Cordes, supervised the day along with the aid of Ms. Geis, Mrs. Chua, Mrs. Salpepi, Mr. Dave, Mr. Lipari, S. Joan Heptig, S. Mary Ann McCarthy, S. Grace Avila, S. Mary Powell and S. Margaret Anella. Their work is greatly appreciated because a good number of students did make it to school to take their Regents exam. Track team outruns competition Headed for MSG Millrose Games

Congratulations to the track team on a remarkable accomplishment. The 4x400 meter relay team of Aziza Hawthorne, Sabrina Cammock, Cristina Martello, and Kymberly Johnson became the 1st TMLA team to qualify for the prestigious 104th Millrose Games. This championship race will be held at Madison Square Garden on January 28th.The team competed against 25 other CHSAA relay teams from NYC and Long Island for 1 of the 6 spots. TMLA was the only Brooklyn/Queens school to qualify.

...anything can happen. Today we had a food drive. Hundreds of food products were donated by TMLA homerooms in a food drive organized by Pax Christi/Outreach. The group's members collected and organized the donations, which were brought to St. Benedict the Moor Parish in Jamaica. The food will be distributed to parishioners in need.

Pax Christi/Outreach is directed by Ms. Kathryn Bruen and Mr. Patrick Mahon. Sister Marie Mackey CSJ and Mr. Michael McCarthy also lend a hand.

History Day at TMLA

TMLA celebrated the "History of the World" at a day long festival. The theme of this year's fair was Liberty. Students and faculty dressed as their favorite figure in history. On display were many student-made projects on a wide range of topics. The fair also included excerpts from important US documents dealing with the topic of Liberty. Also included was a student version of Judge Judy that illustrated the freedom and liberty we enjoy in America. Selected TMLA students received awards for their work.
Seventh and eighth grade students from elementary schools also took part in the fair submitting essays on the topic of Liberty. More than 30 elementary school students attended the day at TMLA and received awards for their projects. View the video here.

Crime Scene Investigation comes to TMLA! On October 12 Detectives Daniel Mulvanerty and Chuck Reiss from the New York City Police Department visited our Forensic Science classes. Through an interesting powerpoint presentation and other visual aids, the detectives gave Mrs. DiMartino's and Mrs. Salpepi's students a first-hand look at how crimes are investigated, how evidence is collected, and how crimes are solved. The girls were especially interested in actual crime scene photos shown by the detectives. The visit reinforced such topics as crime scene analysis and documentation, fingerprinting, blood and DNA evidence and investigative technique - all of which are studied in the Forensic Science program at TMLA. Walk-a-thon 2010

TMLA's 12 annual Walk-a-thon took place on October 29, 2010. All four years enjoyed a bagel breakfast, a dance warm-up in the gym followed by a 30-minute walk through Jamaica Estates. TMLA mourns the sudden loss of Sister Margaret Brosile, CSJ, formerly known in religious life as Sister St. Benedict. Sister Margaret had taken ill on October 20 and underwent heart bypass surgery. She passed to the arms of Jesus on October 26th, 2010 in her 62nd year of religious life.

Sister Margaret had been a member of TMLA since 1963. She is remembered as the heart and soul of TMLA's Music Dept. For more than three decades she led the Glee Club and Orchestra. Her Christmas and Spring concerts remain unrivaled, along with the annual St. Cecilia Day assembly.
During her later years Sister Margaret remained active within the Mary Louis Community, working in administrative positions in the school, most frequently as the Director of Transportation Services.

Nearly 200 people attended the very pleasant evening which included wonderful food, and entertainment by the Select Chorus, musicians and dance group of TMLA. National Merit Semi-Finalist

The Mary Louis Academy is proud to announce that senior Jessica Von Treschow has been named a semi-finalist in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Jessica is one of the top 16,000 highest scorers from the more than 1.5 million present high school seniors who took the PSAT in their junior year. She is pictured here with TMLA Principal S. The first week of October saw a few different events going on at TMLA. Photos include the first Crossroads Retreat held overnight on October 5-6. Homecoming a spectacular event

Many were moved to tears as nearly 1,000 alumnae, friends, faculty and supporters returned home to The Mary Louis Academy on October 2, 2010 for our 75th Anniversary Homecoming event. Guests entered through the main doors on Wexford Terrace, then climbed the staircase to the main foyer where they were greeted by Principal, Sister Kathleen McKinney, and Assistant Principals, Sister Filippa Luciano and Mrs. Ann Cordes, both alumnae.

Above left, students dressed in uniforms of the past served as guides for the day.

Guests registered by class year then toured the school. Special set ups included A Walk through Time at TMLA which featured videos, photos and memorabilia from each decade. Special events were also held by the school robotics team, in the art studio, and in the gymnasium. The library held trivia contests and yearbook visuals. TMLA items were sold in the cafeteria, the Glee Club and Orchestra held a special performance of music through the decades and graduates recorded their own memories of TMLA. Present-day students, dressed in uniforms from all the decades, acted as tour guides. The day concluded with a Liturgy for deceased alumnae which concluded with a rousing rendition of the school song, CRUSADERS.

TMLA's Summer Journalism Workshop for 7th & 8th grade girls from area Catholic schools produced an online newspaper and print newspaper. The students did a great job putting together articles on many topics including profiles of each of their schools. Watch for issue number 2 in October.

More than 250 young ladies arrived at TMLA on Sept 1 & 2 for Freshwoman Orientation. The Class of 2014 enjoyed two days of activities designed to help them get to know TMLA and each other. The orientation ended with a class barbecue. In these photos students work on creating their homeroom interpretations of TMLA's philosophy of Love, Unity & Reconciliation.

Construction of the new biology lab at TMLA has come a long way this summer. Just about all has been installed including computers at each workstation. A little more work will bring out a truly high end high school lab that will serve many years of TMLA students well in their learning process. Thank you to all who have supported this project.

Summer Fest That's Italian Pasta & Pastry

Italy came to TMLA during That's Italian Day at TMLA Summer Fest. TMLA faculty Mr. & Mrs. Maurantonio showed students several aspects of Italian culture, taught a few Italian phrases, then directed a hands-on demonstration of pasta and pastry-making. Designing Art with Math

Designing Art with Math (click for photos) was a topic of study at TMLA's Summer Fest. TMLA Math teacher, Ms. Geis, introduced concepts of math that are evident in Art. Students reviewed great works of Art such as the Mona Lisa in relation to Math. Students then reviewed works by Escher and learned about tessellations. Afterwards, students created their own tessellations in the style of Escher.

Sister Marie Mackey,CSJ, a member of TMLA's Dept. of Religious Studies and a graduate of TMLA, Class of 80, offered a wonderful mini-retreat experience for our 7th and 8th grade girls taking part in TMLA's Summer Fest. Sister Marie offered students the opportunity for introspection, discussion, journal writing, reflection, prayer and a guided meditation. Students were given their own New Testatment for Teens and Sister Marie offered suggestions on how the girls might read and pray the NT in new ways. Session 2 of TMLA's CSI summer class for 7th & 8th grade girls featured more Forensic Science fun. Students learned about criminal procedures and scientific processes. Summer Fest Magic in the Laboratory

Thirty 7th and 8th grade girls from Catholic schools in Queens took part in Magic in the Lab Day at TMLA. Under the direction of TMLA Chemistry and AP Bio teacher, Mrs. DiMartino, the girls learned basic chemistry and biology principles. The clear - or rather colorful - favorite was learning about polymers. The girls created their own wacky putty. Later they did their own DNA extraction and created the DNA double helix in origami. TMLA has state-of-the-art chemistry and physics labs and an all-new high-tech biology lab is being installed this summer.

As part of TMLA's Summer Fest program, 7th & 8th grade girls from Catholic schools in Queens took part in a CSI event (click for photos) at the school. The students learned about fingerprint and blood evidence including spatter patterns. Students dusted and lifted finger prints and analyzed blood spatter patterns.

Bye, bye Bio Lab - Thank you to all for your support!

The original biology lab, built in 1956, was gutted this week in order to make room for a new, cutting-edge Living Environment Laboratory to be ready for September. The old bio lab was built as part of the new wing and was designed more for lecture, rather than hands-on learning. A depiction of the new bio lab is here. The Mary Louis Academy mourns the loss of Sister Angela Mullen, CSJ, Principal of TMLA from 1971-1977. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday June 21, at 11:30 am in Maria Regina Chapel, Brentwood, NY. S. Angela Mullen directed TMLA through one of the most change-filled times in Education. Sister Angela oversaw the use of modular scheduling, weighted GPA's, curriculum advances, the expansion of resource centers, the 40th Anniversary, uniform changes, and more. Prior to becoming an administrator, Sister Angela taught Biology, including at St. Anthony's Diocesan High School in Huntington. After leaving TMLA, Sister Angela continued her work in the Diocese of Rockville Centre Chancery Office. A bit of trivia, Sister Angela was also an honorary Boy Scout! The traditional Graduation Mass (click on links below for photos) was held in honor of the Class of 2010 on Thursday June 3, 2010. The Graduation Mass has been celebrated for every graduating class of TMLA since 1940. Graduates, faculty, family and friends gathered in Immaculate Conception Church for Mass and the distribution of tassels and yellow roses. As always, grads wore their gowns, but not their caps, for the Graduation Mass. Rev. Chris Cleary officiated.

National Italian Exam Winners

Two TMLA students, Mary Capobianco and Melissa Rodriguez, achieved national ranking in the National Italian Exam results, being awarded first and third place in their categories. More than 5,000 students nationwide took the National Italian Language Exam. The winning students received monetary awards. Congratulations to the students and to their teachers, Mr. Maurantonio and Mrs. Liotopoulos.

National Latin Exam Winners

More than 52 TMLA students received awards for their outstanding performance on the 2010 National Latin Exam. TMLA also had one student achieve a PERFECT score on the National Latin Exam. We congratulate the students and their teacher, Ms. Prien. The Latin Program at TMLA has more than doubled in size during the last four years including the addition of the Latin AP. We thank Ms. Prien for all her work and effort in making the Latin dept. so successful.

JV Softball captures title

On Friday, the JV Softball team defeated Archbishop Molloy.As a result, our JV captured the Queens Regular Season title and will enter the Playoffs as the #1 seed.The winning pitcher was Gabby Rey, with great hitting from Val Johnson, Deidre Munday and Tatiana Lynch. The defense was led by catcher Lydia Apolago. Congratulations to our Regular Season Champions and the coaches, Mr. Misa and Ms. Chiappetta.

Junior Brittany Nieves won first prize in the 2010 Queens Tribune Mother's Day Essay Contest. Brittany's essay was chosen from among hundreds submitted by students throughout Queens. Brittany's essay was submitted by her Junior Honors English class teacher, Ms. Janice Berdine.

Mrs. Ezzo Named Teacher of Distinction

TMLA Physical Education Department Chairperson, Mrs. Michelle Ezzo, was recently honored by NYS Senator Frank Padavan as a Teacher of Distinction. Mrs. Ezzo has long been a much valued Physical Education and Health teacher and dept chair at TMLA. Mrs. Ezzo has headed many important and history-changing events at TMLA including the Middle States Association studies and examinations.

The Parents Club of TMLA sponsored a Night in Paris Social on April 23, 2010. More than 200 parents and friends of TMLA gathered in the school dining hall for food, fun, raffles and auctions. The event was a great success and we thank all of the parents for their huge efforts and support and to Sister Eileen Gildea for her time and effort in the coordination of the event. Photos here.

Young Women in Math Day at TMLA

More than 120 seventh grade girls from 42 public and non-public elementary schools took part in Young Women in Math Day at TMLA. The April 21st event was designed to highlight and encourage the Math talents of girls. So often our young ladies are told or believe themselves that they can not do Math, that Math is for boys.

Not so! Our very talented young ladies competed in individual and team Math competitions with more than 20 winners announced. (There were a number of ties.) Monetary awards were given along with certificates. Every student received a T-shirt and folder of Math fun.
